Birth, Marriage and Death Registers

The Prague City Archives hold parish and civil registers from the territory of Prague dating from 1584 to 1949. These registers usually contain:
• Birth registers up to approximately 1924
• Marriage and death registers up to approximately 1949

Prague parish and civil books are being digitised on an ongoing basis and made available online through the Archival Catalogue. To facilitate the search for a specific parish register, we recommend using the online finding aid. The Prague City Archives provide paid analogue and digital copies; see the Price list

More recent registers remain in the custody of registry offices as so-called "live registers". For the territory of former Greater Prague, the remaining registry books up to 1949 that have not yet been transferred to the Archives are concentrated at the Registry Office of Prague 1. Events occurring after 1950 must be requested from the registry office of the municipal district where the birth, marriage, or death took place.

Please note:

Registers of Jewish religious communities are preserved by the National Archives in Prague.
The military registers are kept in the Military Central Archive.
Individual volumes of parish registers from territories incorporated into Prague in later years may be held by the State Regional Archives in Prague.
