Prague Census Records

The Prague City Archives holds census schedules from the years 1869, 1880, 1890, 1900, 1910 and 1921. Only a small portion of the 1869 census has survived. For the period 1880-1910, census records for Prague Districts I-VIII have been preserved almost in their entirety, while those for municipalities within the territory of Greater Prague survive only in part. The 1921 census is nearly complete for Prague Districts I-XIX. In addition, the collection contains the 1910 census for the Jílové judicial district and the 1921 census for the Smíchov and Karlín judicial districts located outside Greater Prague.

Census records may provide valuable information regarding households and family composition. Depending on the census year, records may contain:
names of all household members,
age,
occupation,
religion,
birthplace,
relationship to the head of household.

Census sheets are being digitised on an ongoing basis and made available online through the Archival Catalogue. For census sheets that have not yet been published online, the Archive provides paid extracts; see the Price list. To process a request for an extract from census sheets, however, it is necessary to provide the exact address of the house, including the city district or street and the building number.
